The proposed research will assess how the interaction of the home literacy environment and the physical environment of home can affect cognitive development during the first two years of life.

The findings will enrich the limited knowledge that exists currently of the influence of this interaction on cognitive development during childhood. Currently, one of the main contributory factors to poor child health in NZ is the unsatisfactory physical state of much of the housing state. While the effect of housing shortage and limited housing conditions in major cities in NZ is clear, a better understanding in the impact of this on cognitive development will help inform the development of effective interventions to address early child development inequalities.
