Numeracy skills are important for social and academic success in modern society. The foundations of early numeracy learning are likely to include both inbuilt child abilities and the experiences they have within their environment.

We focus here on the home environment in understanding early numeracy abilities because, compared to characteristics like intelligence, the environment is amiable to change. We propose that parents’ financial literacy, over and above that of standard proxy measures of parental education and SES, might impact on children’s early numeracy knowledge.
